What to Expect
Starting therapy can feel like a significant step. You might currently be wondering whether your experiences warrant therapy, especially if you are used to managing things independently. The idea of asking for support can feel counterintuitive, or even difficult to justify to yourself. You may be unsure about what the process will involve or what an initial meeting will be like.
First Steps
Once your message is received, I aim to respond within two working days by email or text message to provide an overview of my ways of working.
We will then arrange a free 30-minute initial conversation online, where we can think together about what you are looking for and whether working together feels like a good fit. There is no obligation, and if I am not the right therapist for you, I will try my best to point you towards other options.
Paperwork
If you decide to proceed, I will ask you to complete three short online forms prior to your first session.
What to Expect from Therapy
Most people who come to therapy are already doing a great deal to manage: researching, reflecting, talking to people you trust. What therapy offers is something different: a consistent, contained space where the focus is entirely on understanding and changing your experiences, rather than simply managing them. Therapy is a space to slow down and make sense of what is/has been happening, in a way that is both thoughtful and practical.
My approach is relational and reflective, drawing on psychological theory while remaining grounded in what is happening in your day-to-day life. Sessions take place via Zoom, FaceTime, or telephone making therapy accessible wherever you are. Seasonal "Walk and Talk" sessions are also available - ideal if, like me, you find that talking whilst walking in nature has a particular appeal.
Together we will focus on:
-
understanding patterns in your thinking, emotions, families of origin and current relationships
-
clarifying the changes that you would like to see
-
identifying what is maintaining your current difficulties
-
developing more flexible responses to stress and pressure
-
building a clearer sense of who you are and what you need in this particular season of life
-
improving emotional regulation and relational wellbeing
Therapy is not about 'fixing' you. It is about understanding what has developed over time and what might be ready to shift.
